Steve Borthwick, Rob Baxter and Richard Cockerill have all been linked with the role of England head coach

Bill Sweeney says the next England head coach should be English.

Eddie Jones has a contract to the end of the Rugby World Cup but is under pressure after disappointing Six Nations campaigns.

Warren Gatland or Rassie Erasmus would not be the next Jones.

Sweeney said the preference would be to have an English set-up.

We think we have a lot of English coaches in the game. As a leading rugby nation, we should be developing English coaches.

The RFU wants to have a new management team in place by the summer of 2023 to allow a smooth handover from Jones.

The next head coach won't necessarily have previous international experience, opening the door for an approach for Rob Baxter, whose contract with Exeter expires in 2023.

Steve Borthwick, who worked as forwards coach under Jones for four years, and Richard Cockerill, who fills the same role currently, are also in the running.

Jones was hired as England head coach. He has led the team to three Six Nations titles and a Rugby World Cup runners-up finish.

England are heading in the right direction despite indifferent performances and poor results recently, according to Sweeney.
