You know what they say, the sixth time is the charm. According to a report published yesterday, scientists say the Great Barrier Reef is suffering from six mass-bleaching events because of climate change.
Neal Cantin, coral biologist at the Australian Institute of Marine said that more than half of the coral cover can be bleached completely white and can have signs of fluorescent colors.
The UNESCO said that the reef should be placed on a list of world heritage sites because of the bad state it is in.
Coral reefs bring to mind tropical waters, shimmering ocean and brightly colored fish. Right now, the reef may be indistinguishable from the frozen waters of the polar regions. Last week, heat waves struck both poles and caused a record-breaking warming. There was news that a city-sized ice shelf in Eastern Antarctica had collapsed.
