Movie-lovers, it's time.
The 94th Academy Awards will be held in February, capping a months-long gauntlet of awards shows. The ongoing Pandemic continues to cut into box office performance, but total earnings in 2021 are basically half what they were in a record-setting 2019.
When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to cut eight category awards from the show, it was seen as a way to keep the show under three hours. The Academy will pre-record those awards before the show and then edit them in during the broadcast after intense backlash from fans and filmmakers.
Let's get to the important stuff: How and where to watch, and what you should know about the nominees.
It is easy to watch the Oscars live, whether you are an enduring cable TV subscriber or a streaming cord-cutter. The show airs on ABC. There is a pre-show at 7 p.m.
The Academy will give out awards in the eight categories that were almost cut: Documentary Short, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music Score, Production Design, Live Action Short, Animated Short and Sound. It is not clear if those earlier award handouts will be televised live. It is not clear if those tapings will be broadcast live.
ABC is the network that carries the Academy Awards show. If you have a cable provider sign-in, you can watch online via ABC's website or in the ABC app. Guidance for those who live outside the United States can be found on the Oscars website.
There are also streaming cable providers here. You will be able to watch the show on a variety of platforms, including FuboTV, AT&T TV Now, and others. Most of these services have trial offers, but you will need a subscription. You have options.
We have a full list of Oscar nominees for 2022. Many of the nominees are up for streaming. If you want to catch up on some of the best movies of the year, here is everything you need.
The winner of Best Picture will be the buzziest of the night and will be announced at the end of the show. There are 10 nominees for the Best Picture Academy Award in the year 2022.
Encanto should make some news. The Best Original Song nominee, Dos Oruguitas, is not the one that will be performed on stage. That honor goes to "We Don't Talk About Bruno", which Miranda also wrote and which has skyrocketed in popularity since Encanto came to Disney+.
Three hosts will be at the Oscars show in 2022. It is a return to form for the Academy after three host-less years, only two of which were impacted by the Pandemic. Kevin Hart stepped down as host of the show before the broadcast after being called out for making homophobic remarks in his past.
The trio of hosts will be on their own. The Academy has a long list of presenters. Expect to see legendary actors like Jamie Lee Curtis and Bill Murray, as well as young sensations like ZoxEB, and music superstars Lady Gaga and DJ Khaled, as well as sports icons like Serena and Venus Williams.
