Oscar Isaac in a promotional poster for Marvel's Moon Knight.

The comic book character of Moon Knight is built around several orientalist tropes that have not aged well in the slightest since these characters were first created in 70s. The upcoming Moon Knight show is trying to kill off the same things that Iron Fist and Shang did in order to make the transition to live action simpler.

The aim of the character's series was to show Egypt as a place other than the pyramids and deserts that have been portrayed in western film and TV. In recent interviews ahead of the show's premiere, director Mohamed Diab was candid about how one of his goals for the show was to help normalize how his home looked. It's always bad, and always over the top.

Wonder Woman 1984 was criticized by Entertainment Weekly in 2020 for its part in Cairo. He said that the Cairo section looked like a country from the Middle Ages. It has twenty million people, we have skyscrapers, and it is a normal place.

Moon Knight's comics were praised by Diab for making an authentic Egypt. He and his producer wife Sarah Goher came up with a 200 page work for the show. He was excited to bring some Egyptian history to the show in a more direct way than the comics allow.

Disney+ will have Moon Knight on March 30. We will have our impressions soon.
