Elsa Lanchester as the Bride of Frankenstein in 1935's Bride of Frankenstein.

Universal's Dark Universe died before it could even get off the ground, one of multiple attempts at building a cinematic universe after the success of the movies of the present day. The Tom Cruise-led The Mummy was very well received by audiences. The Dark Universe had plans for a remake of Bride of Frankenstein, with a planned release for February 14, 2019.

The Bride's film is being rewritten to stand on its own with no resemblance to a cinematic universe in sight. The dramatic history of the attempted remake to Collider was opened up by David Koepp, the writer of Kimi, You Should Have Left. He described it as a great big movie with Bill Condon attached to direct. It wouldn't have been the blend of action and horror that The Mummy tried to go for, because he had written it with two time periods in mind. The first 30 minutes of the film would be a gothic horror production, set in the 1870s.

The Dark Universe was taken by The Mummy. The script was re-written to be considerably smaller, but that didn't work out. He left the project and doesn't know what's going on with the remake, but he knows that it's just part of the job. It's fair to let someone else try it, I got two good cracks at it.

While Universal is trying to figure out what to do with the character, Apple and A 24 are said to be taking their own crack at it. It was reported back in 2020 that they were going to cast the character of Bride, where she is a fake wife who escapes her husband to find her true identity and remake herself in her own image. An interesting premise, but it may have to hold you over until Universal finds a way to bring the Bride and her monster to life a second time.
