  • According to a new book, Trump was "soured" when Kemp said he had already picked a senator.

  • Greg Bluestein said that Trump met with Kemp and Loeffler in a private meeting.

  • The field of Republican candidates was not clear because of Kemp's decision.

The governor of Georgia flew on a private plane with a businesswoman and a presidential advisor to meet with the president about the Senate seat that was soon to be created by Johnny Isakson.

Kemp was tasked with selecting a replacement, and he quickly zeroed in on a woman with rural roots and a belief in attracting female voters to the GOP in the fast-growing Atlanta suburbs.

The conservative favorite, Rep. Doug Collins, was bypassed for the appointment by the governor before the group left for Washington.

According to a new book by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's political reporter Greg Bluestein, when the president met with Kemp and Loeffler, his demeanor became icy.

Trump came into the meeting thinking he was going to be involved in the selection process, but Kemp decided to keep the process outside of the former president's circle, which didn't win the governor any favors.

Trump pointed out that he could be a star one day, but then pivoted to Kemp's spotty level of communication.

He asked Kemp if his mind was made up during the discussion.

The governor told Trump that he was going to join the Senate.

In an instant, the mood soured, and Kemp made a tactical error by not giving Trump reason to believe he had input.

Kemp was told by Trump why he decided to fly to Maryland in the first place.

If you already made the decision, why are you here? Trump asked, according to the book.

The rest of the discussion was described by people with knowledge of the talk as a full-throated confrontation and a super- aggressive job interview.

The governor was asked how the party would retain the seat after Trump pressed Kemp about why he didn't pick Collins.

According to the book, Trump wasn't happy with many of Kemp's responses.

Kemp did his best to answer, but it didn't appease the president. Good luck, Governor.

Insider reached out to representatives of Trump.

In December of last year, Kemp formally announced the appointment of Loeffler to the Senate and sought to assure conservatives by pointing to her strong support of gun rights and a border wall.

There were divisions at the Georgia State Capitol. State House Speaker David Ralston was an ally of Collins and wanted to see him compete for the seat.

According to Bluestein, Collins teased a Senate run that very day while Loeffler was in Atlanta.

The book said that from the beginning, it was obvious that Loeffler was determined not to give Collins an opening to run to her right.

The pro-Collins crowd tried harder to sully the appointee's image before she had time to shape the public's opinion.

Collins launched his Senate bid in the month of January 2020 after he joined the Senate.

Both candidates went on to compete in a multiparty special election in November 2020, the top two vote-getters were Democratic candidates Raphael and Loeffler.

In the January 2021 Senate election, Warnock defeated Loeffler by a wide margin.
