Strong ice shoves caused some serious damage to homes along Lake Winnebago.

An ice shove is a surge of ice that moves onto the shore. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says that ice shoves occur in the spring when ice on a body of water is partially thaw and break apart. Ice shoves can move as far inland as a few hundred yards with strong winds.

An ice shove hit the house on Lake Rest Lane on the west shore of Lake Winnebago, causing Wade Sammons to work to fix it. He said the ice pushed in a wall of the house, broke windows and furniture, and installed brand new cabinets last year.

Sammons said that he could see through the front of the house.

The phenomenon of ice shoves, which happen to some extent every year, is something that people along the shore of Lake Winnebago are familiar with.

The ice is going to pile up in that direction when the warmer temperatures start and we start getting winds.

One of those once-in-100-years type of ice shoves was called the incident by Sammons.

Sammons checks on his parents at their summer home. The house has been owned by them for close to 45 years and they have never seen damage like this before.

They have had ice pieces about the size of a softball on their deck, and that is as close as they have ever gotten. He said that it had never been like this.

Sammons said the ice shoves make a noise as they push everything out of the way. He said that there isn't much people can do to stop the ice from coming.

Sammons said that a local construction company was helping to remove ice from homes along the west shore of Lake Winnebago. Sammons was waiting for the construction equipment to reach his parents cottage when he was working to remove ice from the inside of the house.

Sammons said that the clean up was like you were sifting through a collapsed building.
