She went for more than 20 points and 20 rebound in a game for the first time in her career. It was the fourth time in NCAA women's tournament history that a player had at least 25 points and 20 boards.
Boston said no when asked if she was demanding the ball in the fourth quarter, then added that she probably should have.
She said that she was being patient and that a lot of it came off of the boards.
The winner of the South Carolina and Creighton game will play for a spot in the Final Four.
The best game plan for Friday night was to stop the points in the paint. South Carolina was held below its average in that category to a season-low 20 points, but its improved perimeter shooting allowed it to grow its lead to double digits when the third quarter ended.
The Tar Heels made another run after shutting down South Carolina's perimeter shooting, closing the gap to four with 2:02 left to play. When Boston is on the floor, stopping South Carolina from making 3s isn't enough. She made a layup with 55 seconds left. South Carolina dominated second-chance points throughout the game and eight of her 13 fourth-quarter points were second-chance points.
I have watched them on film in preparation. It's not only us that it is happening to. She is strong and powerful. She is kind of a dancer. She is relentless.
I wish she was old enough to go to the pros. I would be sitting in the front row to celebrate her being drafted. I have seen enough of Aliyah Boston.
In the fourth quarter, Saxton said the team noticed something special.
I think that we are coming together and telling her that she needs to be dominant. Saxton said to go score when you get the ball.
Boston said she wanted to keep her head above water during the quarter.
Just hitting the boards. We talked about it. We are going to crash the boards once they take expected shots. I was able to do that.
It is hard to find new awards to describe what Boston does on a court. The numbers speak for themselves. She has a double-double in 27 straight games, and had a double-double in each half of the game. She had a program-record nine rebound in the fourth quarter and almost had a double-double.
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said that she has been dominant in big games. The goal is to win a national championship. That is what she has been talking about. That is what the whole group has been talking about.
She wants to win a national player of the year. Some people can have goals that they don't deliver and have people guessing. She performs. Nobody has performed at the highest level against the best competition in our country consistently all season long, and I think she wants it.
