Illia Ponomarenko reported that the Ukrainian government said it killed the Russian lieutenant general.

The death of Rezantsev was attributed to one of Zelenskyy's aides, according to Ponomarenko. An aide said that the death occurred in Chornobaivka, a village in southern Ukraine.

One of the highest-ranking generals to have died in battle since Russia invaded Ukraine is believed to be Rezantsev. The lieutenant general was said to have died on Saturday.

The 49th Combined Arms Army is based in the Southern Military District at Rostov-on-Don, and has been involved in the invasion of Ukraine. Its forces include mountain infantry, motor rifle brigades, surface-to-air missile batteries, and Spetsnaz special forces.

A two-star officer is a lieutenant general. The US has assessed that Russia needs to send its generals into more forward positions to break through obstacles their forces are facing, and that the Russian military doesn't delegate much responsibility for battlefield decisions to lower-ranking officers.

US intelligence estimates that 7,000 troops have been killed in battle in Russia since the war began. A Western official said that one Russian colonel, a brigade commander, was attacked by his own troops because of their losses on the battlefield.

The rate of casualties is unsustainable.

Mark Cancian, a retired Marine colonel and senior advisor with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, previously told Insider that this is not the Soviet Army of World War II that marched to victory over the bodies of its dead. It is more sensitive to casualties.
