It is hard to be surprised at the news that a giant piece of ice shelf collapsed.

According to a report by the Guardian, a chunk of ice the size of Rome collapsed in East Antarctica. According to the newspaper, the ice shelf likely collapsed around March 15 due to the temperature increase over the weekend. The events may be related, and could be a sign of more climate change events in the future.

It won't have huge effects, most likely, but it's a sign of what's to come, according to NASA planetary scientists.

A video made of photos from NASA's Landsat Program shows the progression of the Conger ice shelf. Various frames show the growth and shrink of the shelf over time, and end with a final shot of the empty ocean water where the shelf used to be. The short clip is shown below and was compiled by an assistant professor at the University of Technology in the Netherlands.

On and On

It's hard to find anything new to say about the collapse of the ice shelf. But journalist and human rights researcher,Sophie McNeil summed it up pretty simply.

"My god, my god, my god," he said on the social networking site.

It is hard not to be discouraged by the constant news about climate change. It's time to start coming up with creative solutions instead of allowing ourselves to be frozen with fear.
