One of the primary amenities that sets a hotel apart from your home - daily housekeeping - is disappearing because of staffing shortages, out of respect for social distance or just to save money.
The days of returning to a non-wrinkle-free bed are over. Accept that your trash might not be taken out during your stay.
The trend of no more daily housekeeping has become the norm at many hotels. Hotels cut housekeeping services to reduce contact between strangers during the early days of the Pandemic. More than two years later, the housekeeping hasn't returned.
Marriott's policies vary by property, but housekeeping is offered only upon request, with all rooms cleaned every sixth night. Unless requested, the default is no more daily cleanings at most properties. Every other day, Disney World reduced service. It doesn't include services you might expect, like getting your bed made.
The Hotel Solares in Santa Cruz, California has a schedule that only allows three- and six-night stays. You should leave trash outside your door.
Service reductions aren't always welcome.
D. Taylor, international president of Unite Here, said that guests don't want to have to ask every time they need their trash emptied.
Why cut hotel staff?
The cutbacks may be more about money than safety. There isn't enough money to cover the cost for some hotels. It is an opportunity to make more of it.
