Russian troops ran over their own commanding officer with a tank after many in their brigade were killed during the invasion of Ukraine, according to reports.

The Washington Post reported that Roman Tsymbaliuk said in a post on Facebook that Russian Col. Yuri Medvedev was attacked after fighting in Ukraine left nearly half of the men in the 37th Motor Rifle brigade dead.

The brigade hit him with a tank, causing him to be hospitalized, according to the newspaper.

The incident took place roughly 30 miles from Kyiv. Russia gained control of the town earlier in the war.

A senior Western official told the newspaper that he thinks the incident shows the low level of confidence among the Russian troops.

The official said that he was killed as a result of the scale of the losses taken by his own brigade.

NATO estimated earlier this week that as many as 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the conflict with Ukraine.

Russian state TV said last week that one of the country's top commanders had died, and that several high-ranking officers were among the dead.

The U.S. accuses Russia of committing war crimes in the conflict, as Ukrainian officials say Moscow is targeting civilians and structures.
