Exxon Mobil is making a change that may or may not be an improvement, instead of simply burning excess natural gas and wasting it completely.

According to a new report, the oil giant reached an agreement with a company that will use the gas to power mobile mining sites.

Danielle Fugere, president of corporate environmental group As You Sow, told the publication about the merits of the decision.

Better Than Nothing

According to a report, Exxon doesn't have enough transportation to move all the gas it produces. It isn't clear how much Exxon is getting paid for pumping the resource to miners.

The gas is going to be burned either way, so at least now it is being used. It's possible that it's the rare case in which a small positive environmental impact is created. Fossil fuels are often used to power warehouses full of mining rigs and create tons of greenhouse gases. It's messing up the economies of entire countries, like El Salvador, which recently required every business to accept Bitcoin as legal tender.

Exxon is pouring resources into an industry rife with fraud and possible money laundering, though it contributes to an industry with a vast environmental impact.

If we had to grade Exxon's new plan, we would give it a solid C, but the real solution would be figuring out how to waste less gas.
