For the first time in the history ofALS, a fully paralyzed patient has used a brain implant to communicate, and his requests were delightful.
A new study published in Nature Communications describes how a brain-computer interface helped a man in the last stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which rendered him completely paralyzed.
The German man's request was for Goulash soup and sweet pea soup, because he loves his son.
The paper notes that the breakthrough must be kept in mind how difficult the process of communication was for the study participant.
The first three months of attempts at communication were unsuccessful. It was only when researchers began using the technology that they made a breakthrough.
On his first day, the man asked the patient to modify an audible tone in pitch, which he was able to do in less than two weeks. Researchers were able to help the man spell out sentences when he responded "yes" or "no" to letters.
The man was able to explain to the German researchers that he was able to manipulate the tone by concentrating on how he would have previously moved his eyes, but he was unable to do so due to the progression of the disease. He was only able to do these sessions with an accuracy of 80 percent. He was able to complete intelligible sentences on 44 of the 107 days.
The work of the researchers behind the work is not ironclad. The New York Times reported that a journal withdrew two papers on the same topic over methodological concerns.
The research appears to be the first time someone has been locked in a brain-computer interface and able to communicate.
