Amazon has invested a lot of resources into technology that it hopes will one day deliver goods to consumers via flying drones.
The program, dubbed Amazon Air, has had a rough road so far. Insider reported this week that last summer in Oregon, one of the company's experimental delivery drones suffered a failure and crashed down to the ground, causing anacres-wide fire.
There is a video that shows a drone falling to the ground and sparking up acres of wheat stubble, an unfortunate incident, but also one that illustrates the potential pitfalls of flying drones.
Amazon issued a lengthy statement about the incident.
Prime Air's number one priority is safety. Our drones fly over sterile ranges to make sure our employees are safe.
We follow procedures for how flight tests are conducted and how we respond to incidents. In this instance, we carried out a test with the utmost caution, as is normal in the aviation industry.
It's not clear where the accident leaves the Amazon Air program, but it's possible that the concept of successful, safe, and is still alive.
Amazon is quietly researching how to block out the sun.
