Marie Yovanovitch, the former US ambassador, told Insider that it will take years to reverse the damage done to the State Department by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Yovanovitch told Insider that Pompeosided over the hollowing out of a great institution. She said that the first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, started it and that the second secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, continued it.

President Joe Biden's secretary of state, Antony Blinken, made a commitment to following the rule of law, protecting diplomats and promoting US policy abroad when he took the helm at the department.

It takes a concentrated effort over a number of years not only to knit the fabric of the State Department back together again, but to give it the kinds of resources that are necessary for our diplomacy, according to Yovanovitch.

In her new memoir, "Lessons From The Edge," the former ambassador didn't hold back when she talked about her opinion of the congressman.

Yovanovitch was recalled from her post in Ukraine in April of this year after a campaign against her by Trump's allies. In her book, Yovanovitch discussed her pleas for the State Department to publicly support her against Giuliani and the false allegations that she was an Obama holdover.

Yovanovitch testified to Congress that Pompeo failed to protect her from the White House. She was one of many witnesses who testified at the first impeachment inquiry. He tried to strongarm the Ukrainian government into launching bogus political investigations into the Biden family while withholding vital security assistance and a White House meeting.

Shortly before the impeachment inquiry was launched, Yovanovitch started thinking about hiring a lawyer.

The department lawyers were supposed to protect the interests of the State, not that of me, she wrote.

She wrote that it was ironic that Pompeo would work with uncompromising personal and professional integrity after being unable to guard her against Giuliani and Trump. She recalled the day she flew back to Washington, DC, after being fired without cause.

The memoir says that the State Department had athos statement with great fanfare. Yovanovitch writes that the statement also promised to show respect in word and deed for my colleagues.

The book says that every Foreign Service officer I knew agreed with these points, but that the irony was too much to handle. He was wanted to walk the walk. He did not need to swagger.

The way the US conducts diplomacy needs to be changed in the same way that the US military changed after the Vietnam War, according to the former ambassador.

She said that diplomacy needs to meet the challenges of the 21st century in a way that reflects many of the tools we have now. She highlighted how journalists, activists, and governments use social media to spread awareness about key issues of the day.

When we respond on social media, we don't have to get approval from 20 different people in Washington, but we can be more effective.
