A Russian billionaire who is on a US sanctions list is struggling to pay his bills and is unsure if he will be able to hire a cleaner or driver.

In an interview with the Financial Times published Friday, Aven, whose wealth is estimated to be around $5.6 billion, said that they don't understand how to survive.

In the interview, Aven asked if he would be allowed to have a cleaner or a driver, as well as if his stepdaughter would drive.

Aven was one of the closest associates of Putin and was one of the reasons why the UK imposed sanctions on him.

Aven stepped down from LetterOne, the investment firm he co-founded, in March. The two billionaires resigned from the boards of Alfa-Bank days after the EU imposed sanctions on them.

Aven was banned from traveling to the EU and the UK because of the sanctions.

He said that their business is destroyed. Everything we built for 30 years has been destroyed. We have to start a new life.

Before the EU sanctions began, Aven said his wife visited cash machines in London to withdraw as much money as she could.

The billionaire told the FT that the sanctions on Russian billionaires were understandable, but not fair.

Aven does not own a yacht or a private jet, which could be subject to sanctions.

Russian billionaires have had their jets and yachts seized since the US imposed sanctions. A $75 million superyacht is linked to Dmitry Pumpyansky and a $120 million yacht is linked to Igor Sechin.
