Bruno is close to signing a new five-year contract with Manchester United.

The club began the process of drafting a deal that better reflected his influence at Old United after he joined in January 2020.

At the beginning of the year, talks between the representatives of the two teams were put on hold, but they picked up again with a breakthrough in negotiations.

The Portugal international, currently involved in the World Cup play-offs, is expected to double his weekly pay packet.

The initial five-and-a-half year deal that he signed when he switched from Sporting was for financial reasons, so the aim is to give him more money than his length of time.

News of the impending agreement on an improved contract came from the homeland of the player, where it was seen as a show of faith from the player despite the uncertainty over the next permanent manager and the futures of several senior members of the squad.

He was the club's best player during his first 18 months at the club, but his form has dipped this season.

'Timing odd' for new Fernandes deal with many other issues to sort

Sky Sports News has a senior reporter.

It's not a priority for Manchester United to tie down Bruno Fernandes on a new contract with improved terms.

The current deal has three years to run with the option of a further 12 months, and the development is all about financially rewarding him for his influence under Solskjaer and cementing his status in the squad.

It will be one less thing to tick off on the long to-do list. With the identity of the next permanent manager still unknown, the timing is odd, given the many big question marks around the squad and the fact that the new contract would reflect that.

While progress is being made on the managerial front, United need to have more certainty in place over the make-up of the team.

The recruitment group accepts that the attack and the center of the park need surgery, and that the right forward and anchor is needed.

In the summer, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, and Paul Pogba will leave. The England international has been below par, but he can point to being played through injury as a semi-defence.

What happens to Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek? Is it Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, and Nemanja Matic?

There are a number of deals that are due to expire next summer.

The Fernandes development is held up against the larger scheme of things.
