New Evidence in China Crash Suggests Midair Breakup

  • 00:00Steve what's the latest you can tell us. Well the latest is that authorities have indicated that they
  • 00:06have found a potentially a piece of the aircraft about 10 kilometers away from the main wreckage site about six miles
  • 00:13away. And that potentially indicates that something came off the aircraft mid-flight. And the questions now are did that cause if
  • 00:24that piece was from the airplane did that cause the plane to go into that nosedive and crash or did it simply come off during
  • 00:33the nose dive. Because the nose dive was highly unusual and it speeds of upwards of 700 miles per hour nearly the speed of
  • 00:41sound. So pieces could fly off the aircraft as it was nose diving to the earth. So it's about one point three meters long
  • 00:50and 10 centimeters wide. It was found on farmland nearby. Now of course that will be part of the investigation. They have the
  • 00:57cockpit voice recorder. There is an indication there are there is damage to the memory unit inside. We'll have to see that
  • 01:05they're still searching for the flight data recorder which will be key to see how the aircraft was performing before and during
  • 01:13before the dive. And during that dive. But essentially aircraft like this one the 737 800 N.G. are designed not to dive so
  • 01:21aggressively. So some kind of aircraft failure for pilot action would have been required to keep his nose pointed down for a
  • 01:28minute and a half.
