The Washington Post reported Thursday that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas pushed former White House chief of staff MarkMeadows to support Sidney Powell, a lawyer who spread conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was rigged against former President Donald Trump.
In a series of text messages after the 2020 election, Thomas wanted Powell to take center-stage as the lead and face of Trump's legal team, which was actively filing lawsuits to challenge the election results.
CNN reported on Thursday that the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot had obtained thousands of texts. The panel has a number of texts exchanged between Thomas and Meadows from November 2020 to January 2021, related to the 2020 election.
On November 13, 2020, days after the major news networks declared Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 election, Thomas sent an email to Meadows. Sidney Powell says that improved coordination will help the cavalry come and expose fraud. The text message could be a reference to then-White House senior advisor and Trump's son-in-law, according to The Post.
Powell had been making baseless claims that election technology firms were working to steal millions of votes from Trump to Biden. Powell had no evidence to support her allegations, so some Trump officials began to distance themselves from her.
She urged Meadows to help Powell be the lead and the face.
Powell had been using the phrase "Release the Kraken" six days later, as a reference to the massive evidence of voter fraud that she claimed to have collected. The phrase was widely used among far-right circles.
According to The Post, Thomas wrote to Mark, "Mark don't want to wake you." Make a plan. The left will take America down if the Kraken is released.
Powell spoke about a baseless, international conspiracy theory involving hacked voting machines and the 2020 election being stolen during a news conference. She stood beside Rudy Giuliani, who was also a personal attorney to Trump.
According to The Post, Thomas wrote toMeadows about what Rudy was doing.
According to the Post,Meadows responded that he was glad to help.
Three days later, the legal team for Trump moved away from Powell and her conspiracy theories.
Giuliani and Ellis said that Powell is not a member of the legal team. She isn't a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity.
In a text on November 22, 2020, Thomas wrote toMeadows that he was trying to understand the Sidney Powell distance.
She doesn't have anything or at least she won't share it if she does.
Thomas sent a text back, according to The Post.
Voting machine companies have sued Powell for defamation. A federal judge called her election claims historic and profound abuse of the legal system.
