Martin has 15 years of high-major coaching experience and led South Carolina to the Final Four. At Kansas State and South Carolina, Martin has a record of almost 300 victories.

South Carolina fired Martin after 10 seasons. His only appearance in the NCAA tournament was the Final Four run. He reached the NCAA tournament four times at Kansas State.
Massachusetts has ties to Martin. His wife is a former track star. J.J. Barea was recruited by Martin from 2000 to 2004.
Since reaching the Final Four in 1996, the University of Massachusetts has struggled. A practice facility that cost nearly $30 million was built by the school to revive basketball's competitiveness.
On Tuesday, the University of Massachusetts met with Martin. The school had discussions with Mark Schmidt, who decided to stay in Olean, New York.
