The act indicates that the administration is open to using executive power to achieve progressive policy goals as Congress remains reluctant to pass key parts of his green energy agenda.
According to a draft of the document that remains in the order, ensuring robust, resilient, and sustainable domestic industrial base to meet the requirements of the clean energy economy is essential to our national security. The administration renewed its push on climate change priorities in light of the shocks in the oil and gas market following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The production of large capacity batteries for the automotive, e-mobility, and stationary storage sectors is essential to national defense.
Several senators sent a letter to President Joe Biden on Wednesday asking him to use authorities contained in the Defense Production Act, which greatly expands the president's authority to change domestic manufacturing policy in times of crisis.
The letter was signed by Democratic senators and encourages Biden to make the U.S. less dependent on oil drilling abroad. In a release earlier this month, the Congressional Progressive Caucus outlined a substantial agenda that could be achieved with the use of Biden's pen. The Defense Production Act was used to bolster the production of green energy technology.
The oil industry is trying to push back on Biden's energy policies by using the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the report, Jamie Dimon proposed to the White House a plan to increase energy production in the West and shore up the U.S. and Western Europe's energy independence. More natural gas facilities in Europe were included in Dimon's suggestions at the meeting where Biden was present.
The Marshall Plan was invoked by the Energy Secretary earlier this week.
