Rick Barnes was rewarded for winning the Volunteers first SEC tournament championship in 43 years with a contract extension.
Danny White did not reveal the financial terms of the extension.
White said that basketball has a special place in his heart and that Rick Barnes is leading the program. I am excited about our bright future as we chase future titles on the hardwood.
The SEC tournament title was the fifth all-time for Tennessee and first since 1979. The Volunteers lost to Michigan.
Barnes has 754 career Division I victories, 150 of which were at Tennessee.
Tennessee went 27-8 this season and was ranked in The AP Top 25 for the second time in Barnes tenure. The Volunteers finished in the top five. Barnes has been the coach for three of the six seasons that Tennessee has won 26 or more games.
The Volunteers tied a single-season school record by beating four top 10 opponents. They have a 17-game home winning streak that dates back to February 2021.
After meeting with our players this week, I am excited to get back in the gym and prepare for next season.
