  • Consumer Reports found toxic PFAS chemicals in fast food packaging.

  • McDonald's, Burger King, and Sweetgreen were included in the report.

  • The affected packaging will be phased out by several restaurants.

Fast food containers from eight different restaurant chains were found to contain harmful chemicals, according to an investigation by Consumer Reports.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are known to be long- lasting. Over time, the chemicals in the environment can build up in the body. Long-term exposure to PFAS has been linked to an increased risk of some cancers, immune system suppression, and problems with fetal development.

Several states have passed laws banning or limiting the intentional use of PFAS in food packaging, but the chemicals are so widespread that they may inadvertently be used.

Almost all of the people who have been tested in the US have some level of the compounds in their blood. Recent research has shown that there are a lot of sources of PFAS exposure.

Consumer Reports investigated the presence of PFAS in food packaging. According to a review in the journal Food, the chemicals used to make paper and cardboard grease-resistant are more likely to be absorbed by food.

The substances migrate into food you eat, according to an environmental engineer at the Food Packaging Forum.

Testing for indicators of PFAS

More than 100 food packaging products from 24 restaurant and grocery chains were tested by Consumer Reports.

Since there are thousands of known chemicals in the class, investigators tested the materials for fluorine, a standard indicator of the class.

There is no national standard for fluorine in foods or food packaging, but some states have begun using the indicator to regulate PFAS. The limit of 100 parts per million organic fluorine in all food packaging will be in effect from January 1, 2023.

Eight of the 24 fast food and supermarket chains were included in the Consumer Reports study.

PFAS found in every brand tested, including bags for fries and baked goods

Grease-resistant paper bags used for chips, cookies, and fries were a common culprit across restaurant chains. The bags were tested for hundreds of parts per million.

Not all of the materials tested contained levels of fluorine, but every restaurant included in the investigation had some piece of packaging test positive for the compound.

It is possible to make packaging that is nearly PFAS-free.

Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, said in the report that it is feasible for retailers to use packaging with very low levels of PFCs.

The brands have been contacted by Insider.

Consumer Reports was told by several restaurant and supermarket chains that it would be difficult to remove all traces of PFAS from packaging. In recent years, many companies have decided to phase out the use of PFAS in food packaging. Consumer Reports tested some of the packaging from those restaurants and found that there were indicators of the chemical.

McDonald's and Taco Bell intend to remove the chemicals from their packaging by the end of the year.
