Jackson faced the Senate Judiciary Committee in the first of a series of high-profile confirmation hearings.

USA TODAYUSA TODAY

The first Black woman to be nominated to the US Supreme Court is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. She is speaking on abortion, critical race theory, and court-packing for hours. The most captivating moments of the hearing were found in the expressions of the family behind her: a husband overwhelmed with emotion, a daughter who smiled at her mother.

Jackson's introduction of her family members helped add context to how she arrived there, and they were tender moments that hint at the enormity of the day. She told her daughters that it had not been easy as she had tried to juggle her work and family life.

Her family's emotion and her nod to their support and sacrifice shine light on the historically overlooked achievements of Black women, the challenges of working mothers, and the value of men who champion them.

Hearings for Supreme Court nominees are not just political procedures. They are live drama media spectacles. Jackson Katz, a gender expert and author of several books on the politics of masculinity, said that the theatrics are the focal point of these important cultural moments.

Jackson wasHumbled by his historic nomination to the Supreme Court.

The author of "Blue-Chip Black: Race, Class, and Status in the New Black Middle Class" said that Jackson's husband's tears are not important. Patrick Jackson, who is white, is married to a Black woman, which gives him a front-row seat to some of the unique challenges Black women face in white-collar occupations.

The inauguration of Kamala Harris is a milestone moment.

She said that most white men are not positioned to see the world from this vantage point. Black people have been denied the opportunity to reach their full potential, every now and then, but there is a breakthrough.

Jackson's husband offers 'honest display of emotion'

Jackson's husband was called a model for healthy heterosexual partnership by many users on social media.

One of the great things about media coverage of Brown Jackson's husband's response to her nomination is that in an era when so many men in public life are clearly threatened, it's nice to see him show emotion.

Tony Porter, founder of A Call to Men, an organization that focuses on reframing the definition of manhood, points out that the attention around the display of emotion also underscores how uncommon it remains.

If her mother was wiping a few tears, we wouldn't question this. He said that they wouldn't question it if her daughters or her girlfriend were wiping away a few tears.

Working mothers praise Ketanji Brown Jackson's vulnerability

Many working mothers thanked Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for her vulnerability after she spoke to her daughters about failing to always get the balance right. They also felt that. They still feel it.

Porter said that Jackson had to put in a lot of time and energy to succeed as a Black woman, facing the dual forces of sexism and racism, which kept her from being fully present in her children's lives. He said it was notable that Jackson needed to apologize for it.

He said that a woman celebrates the success and feels she has a responsibility to apologize for her absence.

Middle- and upper-middle-class Black mothers are more likely to stay in the workforce, according to research by a sociology professor at the University of Maryland-College Park.

Jess Calarco, a sociology professor at Indiana University who studies systems of inequality, said those decisions reflect racial wealth and income inequalities that can make it difficult for many Black mothers to afford to stay home with their children, as well as reflect racist stereotypes that Black women may face if they do decide

Calarco said that the work shows why and how Ketanji Brown Jackson has persisted despite the challenges of being a Black mother working in a field built for wealthy white men, and also shows why her family has rallied behind her.

Jackson told her daughters that with hard work, determination and love, it can be done. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with your life.

The cheering went both ways.

During the hearing, a yellow piece of paper adorned with hand-drawn balloons was on her daughter's seat.
