A Florida driver was killed in the middle of the night after crashing into an alligator.

The cause of death of the driver has not been released.

It happened early in the morning. The road is south of Lithia. The community is close to the Florida coast.

The front of the victim's vehicle struck an alligator that was in the road.

The vehicle went off the road to the left and overturned in a ditch on the north side of the road. The victim was dead at the scene.

The alligator also died.

The waters of Alafia River State Park are known to host alligators. The investigators did not speculate on where the reptile came from or where it was going. The crash happened west of the park.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, there are an estimated 1.3 million alligators in the state.

The longest male in Florida is 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches, and the weight is 1,043 pounds, according to the state.
