Some countries have different timelines than others. South Korea was able to flatten the curve of its coronaviruses outbreak because of a combination of contact tracing, testing, and isolating cases. The number of new cases has grown in many countries. The number of daily new coronaviruses cases has been reduced by countries that started testing early.

  • There is a map showing how BA.2 has outcompeted other types of Omicron.

  • There has been a new surge of cases in Europe.

  • Some say that a wave could be mild, but experts warn that a wave could soon reach the US.

According to the latest CDC data, the Omicron BA.2 subvariant has become the dominant variant in the northeastern US.

The news comes as a surge of new cases in Europe, driven by the more-contagious BA.2 and by countries lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Some experts are worried that another wave could come to the US.

Insider was told by experts that a wave of BA.2 in the US could be milder than in Europe because of previous exposure to its cousin. The experts said vulnerable groups could still be at risk.

According to the CDC, BA.2 made up over half of the samples collected in HHS Region 1. The region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

In HHS Region 2, BA.2 made up 51.8% of the samples.

The other subtypes of Omicron made up the rest of the coronaviruses cases.

The subvariant makes up about 35% of all cases in the US according to estimates from the CDC.

The subvariant of Omicron which is still dominant worldwide is thought to be more contagious than BA.2. It is not thought to be more dangerous than other Omicron variants.

Insider previously reported that it was not yet clear if BA.2 would cause a huge surge of cases in the US.
