The administration of President Joe Biden sent letters to Mehmet Oz and Herschel Walker, asking them to either resign from the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition or be terminated by the end of the day.
Walker and Oz, who are running for the US Senate as Republican candidates in Georgia and Pennsylvania respectively, were appointed to the council by former President Donald Trump.
According to the Hatch Act, government employees may not be candidates in partisan elections. In a letter sent to the pair on Wednesday, an assistant to the president requested their resignation.
Please submit your resignation to me by the close of business today, I am writing on behalf of President Biden. If we don't receive your resignation, your position with the Council will be terminated at 6 pm tonight.
The decision was condemned by Oz in a flurry of messages.
Oz wrote that Joe Biden can't be around anyone who doesn't fall in line with his authoritarian one-size-fits-all COVID handling.
