It can now find keywords, not just names.

The feature that searches through the content of your conversations and returns specific messages that contain a specific phrase has gotten a big upgrade. If you want to find a conversation you had with a friend, you can just type it into it.

If you want to see results for people, groups, or messages, you can choose whether or not you want to look for someone's name.

We know you’ve been waiting for the option to search your DMs…

This change has been in the works for a long time. Content search was coming later in the year when it was brought to the mobile platform by the social network. The original search was available on the iPad for almost two years before it was added to the phone.

Testing it out myself, the improved search seemed to work on the web, as well as the apps. It doesn't seem to search all of them, but it did find some results from 2020, and I didn't see any results from earlier. Attempts to search for people's names seemed to only look back that far.
