A bunch of Red Sox players reached out to recruit long-time Colorado Rockies infielder Trevor Story when he was considering signing with Boston.

Even the man he might replace.

Story said Wednesday that he would join the team to play second base, after the Red Sox made it official that he would do so.

He reached out to me. We talked on the phone. Story said that he didn't have to do that. He wants to win. He wanted me to come here and that made me feel comfortable.

Boston made its biggest splash of the off-season when it agreed to terms with Story on a six-year deal for a reported $140 million. Considering that they already have a four-time All-Star at the infield position, the Red Sox were not a good fit for the two-time All-Star.

Story will move to second base to provide stability at a position where Boston has lacked it since Pedroia was injured. Story gives the Red Sox a long-term solution at the position if Bogaerts opts out of his contract at the end of the season.

Everybody here already knows how much of a priority winning is for the organization. He showed it again in terms of this process, said Chaim Bloom, Red Sox chief baseball officer. He sees talent. You could feel how much he wanted to add to this group and how much he wanted another ring.

Story hit 24 homers for the Rockies last season and is a lifetime.272 hitter with 158 homers. In five major league seasons, he has never played a defensive position.

Story said he played second base in the minor leagues and has experience playing in the shift. He won't have much time to work on it because of the shortened spring training.

He said he was comfortable playing second.

The thin air in Denver made it necessary to move to Boston. Story has a.303 batting average with 95 homers and.279 in the bank at Colorado's Coors Field and.243 on the road.

There is a stigma around Coors Field that the ball flies.

The team pored over the data from the Coors Field effect and came to the conclusion that Story would come with him to Boston.

It is always a hot topic when a really good player from the Rockies leaves for a new team.

The replica of the Green Monster was something that Story was eager to take batting practice at.

When I hit a ball off the wall, I will second no matter what. I might need to walk that back a little bit.
