There are two types of smartwatches, the Apple Watch and everything else. There are plenty of choices. No one company is going to challenge Apple at the cash register since no one company made its own Tizen-based watches.

It is a different story on the platform side of things. It is important to keep Wear OS up and running because it is a good way to build user profiles. If you remove pure fitness bands like the MiBand and watches that aren't really too smart, you'll find the best Android watches using the software.

Wear OS needs to be something that consumers like you and I want to use in order to keep pushing it. I thought the last chance to turn Wear OS into something people would want to own was with theGalaxy Watch 4.

It did not happen.

By most accounts, theGalaxy Watch 4 is a successful product, and it didn't cause the company to lose money by building it. Wear OS was not what it needed to do the most, which is why it is a must-have for most phone users.

There are more people using the smartwatches than the Apple Watch. If you measure success by the number of users, you will find that the Apple Watch is more successful than the other products.

If you have a new iPhone you probably want to have a new Apple Watch to go with it.

If you have an iPhone, you want to have an Apple Watch, but you can't say the same for people using anANDROID phone. That is a problem if you are Google. If you own a premium phone like the S22 or the Pro, you should buy a new Wear OS device to complement it.

This is doubly important when you think about how the company makes money. Target advertisements are more successful when they know what to show you. It's possible for me to buy fishing gear because of the ads that show up on the internet.

People with disposable income are the exact people that the company wants to get onboard. If you can afford a watch, you can buy fishing gear or something like that. The people who give money for more ads on the internet make companies use the internet to advertise their products, so they are happy.

Wear OS has never been able to achieve this. Maybe it won't.

The things that made Android so popular were taken by the search engine. Those things are probably not what you think.

Billions of users have achieved commercial success because of the free nature of the product. It's not because of rich notifications or the fact that you can change your icons.

By doing so, companies like the ones that built semi-custom products like the ones that were built by the likes of the ones that were built by the likes of the ones that were built by the likes of the ones that were built by the likes of the ones that were built by the Imagine a company trying to build phone software. Two companies that have enormous software departments are struggling to do that. The recipe for success in tech is to put the right software in the right product.

Pairing the right software to the right ecosystem then putting it inside the right product is the recipe for success in tech.

Through and through is how the product is described. Unlike the Wear OS of old, manufacturers are allowed to modify the software experience, and this has been done well bySamsung. You know the GW4 is a watch when you use it.

Maybe another company will be able to take advantage of this. The freedom that Google allows with the operating system made it possible for the company to become just that, as it was not always the darling of the smartphone world. We all have to buy into that thing, and maybe even the Wear OS will be able to turn it into that.

It is a difficult row to hoe. Wearables are limited by their physical limitations. Outside of fitness tracking, a wristwatch isn't a necessity. If you want to check the forecast tomorrow, you can pull the phone out of your pocket.

Wear OS is not done for, and I will not write its obituary. I know that it needs something to boost it as a product for everyone, and theGalaxy Watch 4 just isn't it. Something has to happen in order for everyone to want to wear the phone on their wrist. Something big.
