  • The Supreme Court nominee was interrupted by Graham.

  • Jackson was asked what she thought about the hearings.

  • She had nothing to do with the hearings.

Dick Durbin, the Senate's majority whip, was involved in a back-and-forth between Lindsey Graham and the Supreme Court nominee.

Graham pressed Jackson on her sentencing record in child pornography cases during his 20 minutes of questioning. Graham interrupted Jackson when she tried to answer his questions.

The exchange came to a head when Graham asked Jackson about the Supreme Court confirmation hearings. The top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee interrupted Graham after he exceeded his allotted questioning time.

Graham replied, "Well please, Mr. Chairman." She has a right to give an answer, because she filibustered every question I had. I am trying to make a point in 20 minutes.

Graham went on to accuse Democrats on the committee of withholding information until the hearing to blindside the nominee, because they were aware of the sexual assault allegations against him. The Democrats were caught off guard by the accusations, just as the Republicans were.

He was attacked. Graham asked Jackson how he would feel if we did that to him.

Jackson told Graham that she appreciated the kindness that every senator had shown her during her confirmation process. Graham cut her off, noting that she was a very nice person, and then continued to speak about the handling of the confirmation.

She had nothing to do with the hearings.

Graham slammed his hand on the table after he asked her how she would feel about what happened.

You will not let her finish her response.

The Democratic senator from Vermont, seated next to the Republican, demanded an order in the hearing room. Jackson was given the opportunity to respond to Graham's questions after he was notified that his time had expired.

Jackson told Graham that he had no comment on what procedures took place in this body.

Jackson had a record of child pornography cases. Several Republicans claim that Jackson, when she was a federal district judge, imposed shorter sentences on child pornography offenders than federal guidelines recommended. Legal experts have said that the accusations are false and that the guidelines are outdated and too severe. Some Republicans have distanced themselves from the attacks on Jackson.

Jackson has defended her record, denounced child pornography crimes, and explained her job as a judge during her confirmation hearings this week.

I sent every person in the charts and documents to jail because I knew how serious the crime was. I talked to every person about the harm of the images to the victims. Jackson said he talked about what the crime does to the children who are being abused in the photos. That is what Congress requires of judges and that is what I did in every case.

  • Russia will seek payment in roubles for gas sales from unfriendly countries, according to Putin. His comments sent European gas prices soaring on concerns the move would exacerbate the region's energy crunch. Russian gas accounts for 40% of Europe's total consumption and the collective West has undermined the reliability of their currencies by doing this. The government and central bank had one week to come up with a solution on how to move these operations into roubles, and ordered gas giant Gazprom to make the corresponding changes to gas contracts. The European Commission has said it plans to cut EU dependency on Russian gas by two-thirds this year and end its reliance on Russian supplies of the fuel well before 2030.
