NBC News reported Wednesday that federal authorities prevented former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort from boarding a flight from Miami over the weekend because he was trying to travel on a revoked passport.

Donald Trump pardoned his former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, in late 2020 after he was convicted for his work for a pro-Russia political party.

He was going to leave on a flight. NBC News reported that he was barred from boarding the plane by Customs and Border Patrol.

He can leave the country and apply for a new passport if he so chooses. It wasn't clear why he tried to travel on an invalid passport.

Multiple airports in Russia can be reached via the airport in Dubai.

Trump's 2016 presidential campaign was managed by Manafort.

He was present at a June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower with Donald Trump Jr., Trump's son-in-law and a Russian lawyer who was said to have incriminating information on Hillary Clinton.

As part of the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign, one of the highest-profile defendants was former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

He was sentenced to 7 years in prison for financial crimes related to his work in Ukraine, which was not connected to Russian interference in the U.S. election.

In May 2020 he was released from a prison in Pennsylvania because he was at heightened risk from the Covid-19 virus. He was pardoned by Trump months after he lost the election.

After his arrest, his passport was revoked. After Trump pardoned him, it was returned to him by the FBI.

A lawyer for the man didn't respond to the request for comment.
