Arizona is the first U.S. state to support driver's licenses and state IDs in the Wallet app.
Arizona residents will be able to add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app and securely present it at the security checkpoint at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Travelers are advised to check the TSA checkpoint signs to confirm the availability of the feature.
Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, and the territory of Puerto Rico will soon offer driver's license and state ID in the Wallet app, according to Apple. Georgia, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah are some of the states that will offer the feature to residents.
"We look forward to working with many more states and the TSA to bring IDs in Wallet to users across the US," said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. Apple hasn't said if it will expand the feature in other countries.
The driver's license and state IDs feature in the Wallet app is available on the Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 8.4 or later, and on the iPhone 8 or later, which was released to the public last week.
Residents of participating states can use the button in the top-right corner of the Wallet app to select their driver's license or state ID, and follow the instructions on the screen to set up their account. The user will be asked to take a photo of themselves with their phone, which will be used to verify their identity, according to Apple.
During the setup process, Apple said users will be prompted to make a series of facial and head movements. Apple said that each state is responsible for approving requests.
There is an IDs on the Wallet app page on Apple's website.
