A high-ranking aide of Russian President Vladimir Putin has quit his role as Moscow's climate envoy due to his opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

According to two people familiar with the situation, Anatoly Chubais left the country due to his opposition to the war in Ukraine.

If confirmed, Chubais would be the highest-ranking individual to publicly break with Putin's regime with almost all Russian officials and state media maintaining a wall of silence when it comes to criticism of the president.

There have been some voices that disagreed. Arkady Dvorkovic, a former senior economic advisor to the former president and prime minister, quit his position as chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation last week.

The architect of Russia's post-Soviet economic reforms was described by the news agency as leaving his post.

The source did not say why he left the country and Chubais hung up his phone.

CNBC asked the Kremlin to confirm the reports, but hasn't received a response.
