There is a warning for Star Trek: Picard season 2, episode 3.
The finale of Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount Plus was disappointing, but the most marginal evidence of improvement from the previous season was shown.
We picked up where we left off last week after the recap. Jean Luc Picard, Seven of Nine, and Cristóbal Rios are being held at gun point on the bridge of La Sirena. The rescued head of the Borg Queen is being held by Dr. Agnes Jurati. Jon Jon Briones is the father of Soji, who plays the First Magistrate.
While security forces are dispatched, poor Elnor takes one in the chest, while Rios tries to evade Confederation starships that are hot on their heels. The first ship that Seven is able to destroy is the one named after the villain in Star Trek: Insurrection. The only way to save the situation is for the Queen to connect to La Sirena.

The Queen takes charge, destroys the remaining Confederation vessels, and then takes the crew on a time travel trip back to the year 2024. It is a tribute to the last time major characters in Star Trek attempted such a bold strategy. She has directed two episodes of the second season of Resident Alien.
La Sirena is a little worse for wear after it arrives in Earth. The vineyards of Picard are located in La Barre, eastern France, so they are not located near a populated area. Elnor died from his injuries. The Borg has said is critical to restoring the timeline while Picard and Jurati attempt to restore the Borg Queen back to them. Things will become clear in a moment.
The first trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is here.
It has been speculated that the watcher is going to be in a cave somewhere under San Francisco as we saw in The Next Generation. It seems more likely that it will be Guinan since she has a unique ability to traverse time and Q is involved in the proceedings. Her return is welcome, but it will not come as a surprise.
Jurati gives a solid set up, reminding everyone of the dangers of affecting the timelines. The dialogue in this episode is perfect and despite some generous exposition to help set up the scene, it surprisingly doesn't feel excessive in any way. This episode allows Alison Pill to shine, more so than any other episode in the previous season, and she steals every scene she is in.
Rios suffers an extremely painful looking accident as he jumps about 30 feet in the air and plummets off a fire escape as he tries to get back on his feet. A kind passer-by takes him to a hospital, but that means he is now separated from Seven and Raffi.
The second season of Star Trek: Picard continues to impress.
The quality of this episode comes from good writing and direction, but it also benefits from great casting and Annie Wersching is sinister as the Borg Queen. It seems that the only way to get the required information about the location of Guinan is for Jurati to connect herself to the Queen. This battle of wits set piece is written in such a way that it still makes a difference, despite the absence of the traditional method of assimilation, which usually involves having a couple of tubes inserted into your body, releasing a swarm of deadly nanoprobes that rebuild your body from the inside.
The Rafi and Seven thread of the story has some lovely touches that come from the heart. Rios is in a hospital that offers treatment to those without identification or money. The character of Rios is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite characters from Star Trek.
He is helped by Dr. Teresa Ramirez and there is instant chemistry, but it is handled in a way that doesn't involve a double serving of cheese. The only piece of 25th century technology that they have been allowed to carry beyond the crashed La Sirena is his badge comm. He befriends an adorable little urchin named Ricardo, who is the son of Dr. Ramirez.
The situation seems to be manageable until the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement burst through the door and arrested Rios.
The Borg Queen's watcher, Rios, is in the custody of local law enforcement, something everyone was told to avoid. It's not clear how long he stays dead. When Q restores the time line, it will also prevent Elnor's death. Is his character in the background until that happens? It is going to be fun to watch this story unfold, but it depends on how long this story continues.
ThePicard is aimed at nostalgia aficionados and it incurs a high risk of overkill; nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. The first season was guilty of this many times. This should be considered a lesson on how to incorporate it effectively. The dialogue is believable, the story is well paced, and the humor is placed nicely. These are not new ideas in the history of Star Trek, along with the previously mentioned Star Trek IV and The Original Series. These classic plot lines have been made more interesting by a new perspective. Few shows do this well.
The rating was 8/10.
