World No. 1 Ash Barty announces retirement at age 25 (2:57)

Ash Barty decided to retire after talking with her friend and long-time partner, Casey Dellacqua. (2:57)

Ash Barty announced her retirement on Tuesday.

This is a big deal for tennis. Less than two months after winning her home Australian Open, Barty is the reigning Grand Slam singles champion, and she has two more to look forward to, the French Open on clay and Wimbledon on grass.

Barty has held the top ranking for 114 weeks.

Barty said in an interview that she doesn't have the physical drive, emotional want or everything it takes to challenge herself at the very top of the level.

Barty is the second woman to retire with the world's top ranking, after Justine Henin.

The news sent shock waves through the sports world, with Barty's friends and competitors sending her well-wishes despite their disbelief.

Happy for @ashbarty gutted for tennis 🎾 what a player❤️

Ash, you always did everything the exact way YOU wanted to do it and not what others told you to do. Your own way, own path.. That is what I appreciate and respect so much about you. I will miss my slice buddy on tour 🙏 Congrats champ and all the best! #1 @ashbarty
