Two parents have been charged with manslaughter for allowing their daughter to become morbidly obese.

The parents of Kaylea Titford, 16, appeared in court on Tuesday, charged with gross negligent manslaughter and allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person, in what is believed to be the first case of its kind.

The teenage girl with disabilities was found dead at her home in October 2020.

It is alleged that between March 24 and Oct 11, 2020, Alun Titford and Sarah Lloyd-Jones failed to ensure that Kaylea had enough calories in her diet.

They didn't make sure that she got enough exercise, that she had a safe and sanitary environment, or that she sought help for her physical health.

The pair stood in the dock wearing face masks. They did not enter any pleas after they confirmed their ages and addresses.

Helen Tench asked the defendants to not have contact with anyone under the age of 18. They will be in court on April 14.

It is believed to be the first time that parents have been charged with such an offence.

Two parents were arrested on suspicion of neglecting their obese child. A 49-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman from King's Lynn were questioned by officers over the care of a child.

Norfolk Police said at the time of the separate case that intervention at this level was very rare and only occurred where other attempts to protect the child had failed.

The 11-year-old boy in the case was 5ft 1in tall and 15 stone with a body mass index of 41.8, according to reports.

When dealing with sensitive issues such as neglect of children, officers from the force's Child Abuse Investigation Unit work closely with both health care and social services to ensure any response to address them is necessary.

The case against the parents in Norfolk was dropped.
