Men tend to think they are smarter than everyone else.

According to one of the researchers behind a recent study in the journal Frontiers in Psychology that found men tend to overestimate their intelligence quotient scores more often than women, the pattern seems to be related to how masculine a person is, and not just their assigned sex at birth.

The ethics of IQ tests have been called into question. This new research looked at gender differences in how smart people perceive themselves to be.

David Reilly of Australia wrote in The Conversation that men and women do not differ in their actual IQ.

The Bem Sex Role Inventory test seems to have deep implications for how people assess their gender. They found that people who act more masculine, regardless of sex at birth, think they are smarter than they are.

All I can think abt is that tiktok that explained how comedy requires the audience to trust that the person delivering the joke holds a level of intelligence and this explains why a lot of men fail to realise when women are joking 🙃 https://t.co/0wv95vIBQE

The findings didn't stop there. Sex was still the main indicator of how respondents scored their own IQ, but highly masculine subjects rating their intelligence higher was a trend throughout the study.

There have been tons of studies about which sex is smarter, and this one is one of the first to incorporate it.

The gender differences could have many explanations, from parental attitudes about gender roles to how much praise children get from their teachers. It could explain everything from girls choosing not to pursue careers in science to the gender pay gap.

The case for a common phenomenon is reinforced by this study, as society often teaches men to be wildly over confident even when that belief is wrong.

More on men! The study found that the dudes spread more.
