It all began with swimming. When the second chapter of the game began with the implosion of the original island, it also added a small feature: players could finally swim. The shooter has evolved by making the game faster and more mobile. It may have come as a shock to some when it was removed as part of the current season. It has been a long time coming.
Since players could swim in the game, developer Epic has continuously added new ways for people to get around. Planes, cars, zip lines, launch pads, and giant monsters have all been used to speed you across the map. One of the new mechanics introduced last season allowed you to slide down mountains with incredible speed, while the other involved swinging through trees and buildings. Not all of these things stick around permanently, but they have had a big impact on how you can navigate the world.
The current season is notable for a few things. When combined with sprinting and climbing, you can parkour across sections of the island. You can reach areas up high on the vertical ziplines. The game moves very fast when you compare it to the early days of the game, because of all of the other changes over the years.
Nothing’s out of reach anymore! Mantling is an all new mechanic that allows you to scale walls with ease. Jump in now to try it out. pic.twitter.com/VS99IJQ2H3

Which leads us to building or the lack of it. Most players agree that the feature has been removed from the game. Building has been one of the most unique features of the game. Players can gather resources and build structures to reach high areas. It's amazing to watch the best players in the world build complex structures in seconds, and there's a skill called tunneling, where players construct a tunnel around themselves so quickly that they can run through it while protected from incoming fire.
If you are competing in the World Cup, that's good. Building isn't just complicated for the average player, it can slow things down as you have to pause what you're doing to start. The game's most recent changes allow you to do a lot of the same things but in a more intuitive way. I can sprint and climb up the second floor of a building instead of having to build a ramp. Instead of building a wall, I have a shield. It will be interesting to see how the top players adapt to these changes.
When building comes back to the game, it will be interesting. It is rumored that its absence will last for the first nine days of the season. It could be a short-lived blip in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if the building looked different when it came back or if the removal became permanent. One of the things that has kept the game going for so long is that it always changes. A single update can have a big impact on the experience.
The original island was one of the most defining features of the game.
