On Tuesday, the German gigafactory for electric vehicles opened its doors and began shipping vehicles.

The first 30 Model Y Performance configuration vehicles are being delivered to customers Tuesday. The new production facility is expected to bring 12,000 new jobs to the area and will be attended by both Musk and the German Chancellor. Over 3000 roles have been filled byTesla.

Musk said he was excited to hand over the first production cars tomorrow.

The new gigafactory may be a huge positive for the local economy, but it is sure to worry German car manufacturers. Volkswagen only managed to sell 450,000 EV globally last year, and as a result, it will be 500,000 electric vehicles by the year 2020. It isn't expected to reach 500,000 until 2025.

Musk wanted the gigafactory to start producing vehicles by November last year, but had to get permission from the German authorities. It took until March 4 this year for the permission to be given.
