The Bluejays did it. The South Dakota Coyotes did the same. The 11th and 12th seeds came very close. Two double-digit seeds were given in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA women's basketball tournament after a wild two days of second-round play. Changes to the seeding are required. Right at the top is the biggest adjustment. The South Carolina Gamecocks are no longer the top team. The new No. 1 is the Cardinal. The shake-up is just beginning. South Dakota makes a big jump when a No. 10 seed is one of the most impressive teams in the tournament. The Big East has two teams left in the field, the same number as the SEC and Big 12. Four teams from the Big Ten made it to the Sweet 16. The ACC has three. Of the top 16 seeds, five failed to advance to the Sweet 16, and three of them barely survived. Where do these teams fall? There is a new Sweet 16 ranking after two more days of games. You can find a complete look at Friday's schedule and Saturday's games on the family of networks. You can check your Women's Tournament Challenge brackets by visiting this link. 1. The Cardinal is from the state of California.
Original seed: No. 1
Sweet 16 seed: No. 1
2022 NCAA tournament record: Defeated No. 16 Montana State 78-37; defeated Kansas 91-65
The women's NCAA tournament games are underway. Play a tournament.
The first round was about the Cardinal defense against Montana State. The performance on Sunday was about Lexie Hull and her 36 points. There are many different forms of success for the Cardinal. No team is as diverse as the others. There is no better example of this than this: In its two games, the Cardinal has won by an average of 33.5 points, and Haley Jones has a total of 11 points. The Cardinal showed some fire. They led the Jayhawks by three at halftime, but the lead was 34 less than 14 minutes later. The longest winning streak in the country is by the defending NCAA champion.
The next game is against Maryland on Friday at 9:30 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
2. South Carolina football team.
Original seed: No. 1 overall
Sweet 16 seed: No. 1
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 16 Howard 79-21; defeated Miami 49-33
After a 49-point performance in a second-round victory over Miami, the South Carolina must drop their No. 1 ranking. The outing was an extreme example of an ailing offense. The field goal rate for South Carolina hasn't reached 40% in four of the past five games and the team is ranked 310th in the nation in 3-point rate. The free throw rate is a concern. The defense is so good that the Gamecocks don't slide too far. South Carolina has allowed just 54 total points in two games, breaking the old NCAA record of 71 allowed in the opening two rounds. The team leads the nation in blocked shots and field goal percentage. There is no reason to think the defense won't dominate.
The next game is against North Carolina. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
Raina Perez and Kayla Jones of NC State made 3-point shots against Kansas State.
3. The NC State Wolfpack is a basketball team.
Original seed: No. 1
Sweet 16 seed: No. 1
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 16 Longwood 96-68; defeated Kansas State 89-57
Balance and 3-point accuracy have been the calling cards for the Wolfpack, and nothing has changed in the NCAA tournament. All eight players who saw action in the second round against Kansas State scored at least four points, and the player with just four was All-American Elissa Cunane. Without its star making an impact, NC State still led by 27 points before cruising in the fourth. The Wolfpack made seven of their first 11 shots from deep, which is 10th in the country.
The next game is against Notre Dame. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
4. The Louisville Cards.
Original seed: No. 1
Sweet 16 seed: No. 1
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 16 Albany 83-51; defeated Gonzaga 68-57
The position of a No. 1 seed seemed tenuous for 10 days after they lost to Miami in the conference tournament, and it was only solidified when the Bears lost the Big 12 tournament title game. It is rock solid, even with hard-charging Connecticut right behind. The first half of the season was bad for Hailey Van Lith, but Louisville was still outstanding. She has looked like an All-American so far in the tournament, scoring 20 points per game on 50.0% shooting. If the Cards are to make a fourth Final Four under Jeff Walz, it will be behind their defense, which is rated 10th by Her Hoop Stats.
The next game is against Tennessee on Saturday at 4 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
5. The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team.
Original seed: No. 2
Sweet 16 seed: No. 2
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 15 Mercer 83-38; defeated UCF 52-47
Prior to the second-round game on Monday night, the University of Connecticut had played the University of Central Florida 13 times. The average score for those was 31.7 points. The contest on Monday was not like that. The way the Knights want to play was played. They dictated the pace. If UCF made more than 10 of 20 free throws and didn't commit 20 turnovers, it wouldn't have made it to the Sweet 16. The teams rarely do things like that. They missed nine of 11 layup attempts, shot 29.2% from the field, got outrebounded, and had two players foul out. The 52 points it scored was its lowest of the season. It was the closest second-round game since 1999 for the program.
The next game is against Indiana on Saturday at 2 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
6. The Texas Longhorns.
Original seed: No. 2
Sweet 16 seed: No. 2
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 15 Fairfield 70-52; defeated Utah 78-56
The team is peaking at the right time, that is the dream of a coach. Rori and Aaliyah are playing their best basketball. Moore scored 18 and 21 points in the first two rounds, the highest scoring games of her young career. The point guard has 19 assists in two games, following a 20-point game in the Big 12 championship game. Since the start of the Big 12 tournament, a team that has won all season because of its defense has found its offense, which is averaging 78.0 points per game.
The next game is against Ohio State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
Grace Berger put Indiana up for good with a bucket.
7. Indiana Hoosiers.
Original seed: No. 3
Sweet 16 seed: No. 2
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 14 Charlotte 85-51; defeated Princeton 56-55
The starting lineup has been in college basketball for 21 years. They needed every day of that experience to survive, as they were within a point of being the first Ivy League team to reach the Sweet 16. A layup by Grace Berger with 31 seconds left and a steal by Ali Patberg in her seventh year in college were the difference as Indiana secured its second straight Sweet 16 appearance. Berger leads the way with 14.0 PPG and is one of the five starters who average in double figures. She had 15 points on Monday.
The next game is against Connecticut on Saturday at 2 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
In the fourth quarter, Nolan buries the longball.
There are 8. The Michigan Wolverines.
Original seed: No. 3
Sweet 16 seed: No. 2
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 14 American 74-39; defeated Villanova 64-49
In the fourth quarter, there were a lot of Consecutive possessions that highlighted the best of the UM. They swung the ball around the perimeter and made two or three more passes until Nolan could shoot a 3-pointer. On the next trip down the floor, a pass to the low post found Hillmon for a layup. After never having been to the Sweet 16 before, Michigan's lead was pushed into double figures by that sequence. Hillmon dominated with her 50th career double-double, but Brown's 18 points were more important. Brown missed a month with a leg injury, but she played in just her fourth game.
The next game is against South Dakota. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
There are 9. The Iowa State Cyclones are a team.
Original seed: No. 3
Sweet 16 seed: No. 3
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 14 UT Arlington 78-71; defeated Georgia 67-44
In the first quarter of the tournament, UT Arlington led the Cyclones by eight and looked like it would be an upset. Iowa State has not lost a quarter in over a year. In the game against the Mavs, Joens was the catalyst with 36 points and 19 rebound. Joens deferred to Lexi Donarski and Emily Ryan, and Iowa State's defensive game plan did the rest, limiting the Lady Dogs to 30.4% shooting. The Cyclones usually win with their shooting. They lead the country in 3-point rate and are fourth in free throw rate, but they are a good defensive team and third in free throw rate defense.
The next game is against Creighton on Friday at 9:30 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
10. The Maryland Terrapins are a team.
Original seed: No. 4
Sweet 16 seed: No. 3
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 13 Delaware 102-71; defeated Florida Gulf Coast 89-65
The extended time off between their early exit from the Big Ten tournament and the NCAA tourney seems to have helped the Terps immensely. Diamond Miller is comfortable again and Angel Reese has regained her inside dominance. They combined for 65 of the 89 points against FGCU, and they are playing like the big three they were projected to be. The team that led the nation in points per game a year ago is more similar to the one that is currently in the tournament.
The next game is against Cardinal on Friday at 9:30 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
The Fighting Irish took care of Oklahoma with ease, as they punched their ticket to the Sweet 16.
11. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Original seed: No. 5
Sweet 16 seed: No. 4
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 12 UMass 89-78; defeated Oklahoma 108-64
When the Irish are allowed to play in transition, they look like they did against Oklahoma on Monday. The Sooners thought they could run with Notre Dame. The 44-point defeat was the largest ever by a top-four seed in the NCAA tournament. The freshman point guard dribbled into space and then found people. That made it possible for him to hit seven 3-pointers and 29 points. The two women got layup after layup. For the second game in a row, Miles reached double digits in assists, this time with 12. The most assists for a player in her first two games is 23 by Miles. The Irish face a familiar opponent in the Sweet 16. Notre Dame beat the Wolfpack.
The next game is against NC State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
There are 12. The South Dakota Coyotes are a team.
Original seed: No. 10
Sweet 16 seed: No. 4
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 7 Ole Miss 75-61; defeated Baylor 61-47
The team that was underseeded by the committee has played well. They may still be underseeded. South Dakota has yet to trail in 80 minutes against Ole Miss and Baylor. The defense of Coach Dawn Plitzuweit has shut down two potential top five draft picks. That should be a surprise. The Yotes ranked ninth in the country in points allowed per game. They had not been this good against the Power 5 teams in the last two months of the year. If they win one more time, they will become national stars. They have been conference stars almost their entire careers in the Summit League, with Lamb this year's player of the year and Sjerven a two-time defensive player of the year.
The next game is against Michigan on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
In the fourth quarter of the NCAA tournament, Sara Puckett hit a corner three.
13 Tennessee Lady Volunteers.
Original seed: No. 4
Sweet 16 seed: No. 3
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 13 Buffalo 80-67; defeated Belmont 70-67
Tennessee found a way to win on Monday night, despite being the better team. The Lady Vols went to freshman Sara Puckett, who made a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to win the game. The Bruins only lost the battle on the boards by a single point, but it will regret making 5 of 10 free throws, including two misses by Kinney, before the Volunteers took a one-point lead. Alexus Dye, the Lady Vols' best player in the two games, played for Troy, which was a No. 15.
The next game is against Louisville on Saturday at 4 p.m. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
Carlie Littlefield dribbles to the baseline and makes a layup.
There are 14. The Tar Heels of North Carolina.
Original seed: No. 5
Sweet 16 seed: No. 4
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 12 Stephen F. Austin 79-66; defeated Arizona 63-45
Since taking the Tar Heels coaching job three years ago, it has been building steadily, and now North Carolina is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015. The Tar Heels went into a rowdy environment in Tucson and never let Arizona challenge them. The defense won the game despite the fact that fifteen of North Carolina's field goals were assisted. At the half, the Cats had 17 points and were never in the game after the second quarter.
The next game is against South Carolina. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.
The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the LSU Tigers and advanced to the Sweet 16.
15. Ohio State has a football team.
Original seed: No. 6
Sweet 16 seed: No. 4
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 11 Missouri State 63-56; defeated LSU 79-64
The sixth-highest scoring team in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes, were routed by Missouri State in the first round. They needed their defense to win. The offense came back against LSU. Pointer tried to save LSU the same way she did Saturday against Jackson State, but because Jacy Sheldon and Taylor Mikesell were on the other side, her 32 points were not enough. Mikesell is the second-most accurate 3-point shooter in the country, and she made 4-of-7 on Monday. LSU made less than that in the game.
The next game is against Texas on Friday. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
16. The Bluejays are from Creighton.
Original seed: No. 10
Sweet 16 seed: No. 4
2022 tournament record: Defeated No. 7 Colorado 84-74; defeated Iowa 64-62
The Bluejays are a great offensive team. The Bluejays were ranked eighth in the country in points per 100 possessions and fourth in effective field goal percentage and 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 The pace was slowed by Creighton as they beat Iowa. The Hawkeyes were held to their lowest total of the year by the Bluejays, who clipped and bumped Clark just enough to force her worst game of the season. One of the best stories of the opening weekend was Lauren Jensen hitting the game-winning shot. One of the most intriguing matches of the regional semifinals will be the Bluejays next opponent, Iowa State.
The next game is against Iowa State. The program is on the cable network, ESPN2).
