According to sources, LSU is expected to hire Murray State's Matt McMahon as its next basketball coach.
McMahon came to LSU after a successful run at Murray State, where he won two NCAA tournament games in a row.
McMahon is leaving Murray State to become the next coach of the LSU Tigers, after leading the Racers to a 31-3 record and the school's fourth regular-season conference championship in the past five years.
McMahon is one of the country's best young coaches. In seven seasons at Murray State, he has won 70% of his games and reached three NCAA tournaments.
Will Wade was fired by LSU prior to the NCAA tournament after receiving a lengthy notice of allegations from the NCAA.
McMahon will inherit one of the most uncertain situations in college basketball because of the uncertainty surrounding LSU. There are seven Level I violations and a Level II violation tied to Wade's tenure in LSU's notice of allegations from the Complex Case Unit of the Independent Accountability Resolution Process. It is not possible to project the extent of potential violations due to the upcoming decision from the IARP.
McMahon is expected to receive a long contract that accounts for the potential of NCAA sanctions from the allegations tied to Wade's tenure, as the school has yet to release the terms of the deal.
McMahon's teams at Murray State won two NCAA tournament games. The team of Morant and his teammates went down to the Golden Eagles. The seventh-seeded Racers beat the 10th-seeded San Francisco in the first round in what ended up being an SEC preview, as Florida hired Todd Golden after the game. The Murray State team lost to West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
McMahon came to LSU after getting interest from other jobs, including the one still open at South Carolina.
LSU athletic director Scott Woodward has an affinity for hiring brand-name coaches, and McMahon's profile doesn't fit with that. McMahon was the hottest young coach on the market at the time.
McMahon was a graduate assistant at Tennessee for two seasons, and he has experience in the SEC. After Steve Prohm left to become the head coach at Iowa State, he became the head coach at Murray State.
