The Atlanta Falcons agreed to a two-year contract with free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota on Monday.

The Falcons traded Matt Ryan to the Colts for a third-round draft pick on the same day.

The quarterback spent the past two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, serving as the backup to starting Carr.

He was the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft by the TennesseeTitans, and he was best known for his productive collegiate career at the University of Oregon.

During his five seasons as a starter in Tennessee, he went 29-32 as a starter and completed 62.9 percent of his passes for 13,207 yards, 76 touchdown and 44 interceptions while also rushing for 1,399 yards and 11 scores.

With Tannehill taking Tennessee all the way to the playoffs, the team committed to him and allowed him to leave in free agency.

In order to compete with Carr for the starting job, he signed with the Raiders, but he didn't make a single start.

He was mostly a runner in short-yardage situations in the offense. In 10 games, he attempted two passes and rushed 13 times for 87 yards and a touchdown.

It made sense for him to try out the free-agent market again because he didn't get many chances to show what he could do as a quarterback in Vegas.

The Falcons are getting a dual-threat quarterback with a decent amount of starting experience who could become a quality starter after spending most of the previous three years as a backup.
