Marriott Bonvoy launched its current promotion on purchased points in February, which some members might find worthwhile. If you're trying to finalize any redemptions before the Marriott Bonvoy devaluation on March 29th, this could be a good deal.

Marriott Bonvoy is offering a 50% bonus on purchases through March 23, 2022. You get more bonus points the bigger your purchase, as follows:

• Buy 2,000-9,000 points, receive a 40% bonus
• Buy 10,000-39,000 points, receive a 45% bonus
• Buy 40,000-100,000 points, receive a 50% bonus

How much does it cost to buy Marriott Bonvoy points?

You can buy Marriott Bonvoy points for 1.25 cents each. If you maxed out this offer and purchased 100,000 Bonvoy points, you will receive 150,000 points at a cost of $1,250, which is a rate of 0.83 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point.

Up until now, Marriott has offered anywhere from a 25% discount on purchased points to a 45-60% bonus. This is somewhere in the middle of the promotions we have seen.

How many Marriott Bonvoy points can you buy?

You can buy Marriott Bonvoy points before any bonuses. Marriott Bonvoy allows you to share up to 100,000 points per year with another member, which could be an opportunity to acquire even more points.

It could take up to seven business days for points to be sent. There are eligibility restrictions to be aware of.

• A new member may purchase points 30 days after enrollment if they have some qualifying activity
• Without qualifying activity, a new member may purchase points only one year after enrollment

Which credit card should you buy Marriott Bonvoy points with?

Marriott Bonvoy points purchases are not counted as hotel purchases for purposes of credit card spending.

If you want to reach a minimum spending requirement, or if you want to maximize your return on everyday spending, I would recommend using a Chase Freedom unlimited credit card.

Is buying Marriott Bonvoy points worth it?

Marriott Bonvoy has some amazing hotels around the world, and I am not particularly loyal to Marriott. If you top off an account for a redemption, you can get outsized value for your points at an acquisition cost of 0.83 cents per Bonvoy point.

I stayed at the Bodrum EDITION in the summer of 2020 and it was a great redemption. I redeemed for 240,000 points and paid 48,000 points per night. The normal rate in cash in peak season is $398 per night, but at a rate of 0.83 cents per point, it's less than that.

There are many hotels that offer the same value, from the Ritz-Carlton to the Luxury Collection properties in the Mediterranean.

How many points do you need for a free night with Marriott?

Marriott Bonvoy has an award chart with eight categories of hotels, and each hotel is priced as peak, standard, or off-peak. Redemption rates range from 5,000 to 100,000 points per night, and that doesn't include a fifth night free when you redeem.

You will pay anywhere from 4,000 to 80,000 Bonvoy points per night if you stay in five nights.

Marriott Bonvoy will no longer have a minimum or maximum number of points that hotels can charge for awards as of March 29, 2022. Almost all of the properties will range between off-peak and peak award costs by the end of the decade. Other properties will see price increases beyond the current maximums.

This is bad news for those who want to maximize their points for aspirational redemptions. Some people may want to buy points now to lock in a redemption before the changes kick in.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

Marriott Bonvoy points don't expire if you have at least one account activity every 24 months. This could include any activity you do when you earn or redeem points. Bonvoy points don't expire at all, in light of circumstances, and it's even better than that right now.

How much are Marriott Bonvoy points worth?

I value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents each, and I tend to value them conservatively. The purchase price is higher than what I value, but there are other ways to get more value.

Does Marriott Bonvoy have blackout dates?

The Marriott Bonvoy program has capacity controls on a limited number of dates. On some dates hotels can limit the number of standard rooms that they make available using points.

How else can you earn Marriott Bonvoy points?

The best way to earn Bonvoy points is with a Marriott Bonvoy credit card. Some of the cards offer a decent return on spending.

Marriott Bonvoy is a transfer partner with Amex Membership rewards and Chase Ultimate rewards, but I think there are better ways to redeem those points.

Marriott Bonvoy is offering a bonus on points. There is an opportunity to buy points for 0.83 cents each if you purchase up to a 50% bonus on purchased points. I wouldn't buy Bonvoy points speculatively, especially in light of the upcoming devaluation. With a specific use in mind, this promotion could represent a great deal.
