The U.S. is watching for a decision from Moscow on the use of chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine. Daniel Gerstein, a senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, spoke to Yahoo News about why chemical and biological weapons are controversial and how they destroy.

Russia's military claimed to have destroyed an arms depot during its invasion of Ukraine, which it did twice.

On Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed it had struck an underground missile and ammunition warehouse in a village that borders Romania, and on Sunday, it had destroyed a fuel depot in the southern city of Mykolaiv.

The Defense Ministry claimed the attack used the Kinzhal, a hypersonic missile.

The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse in the village of Deliatyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

The attacks were the first time that the next- generation weapons have been used since the deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine, according to a Russian state news agency.

On March 9, the National Guard of Ukraine shared a picture of an unexploded hypersonic missile in the city of Kramatorsk. Reports didn't verify if it was a missile.

‘Ideal weapon’

The advanced missile was one of several new weapons that Russian President Putin unveiled in his state of the nation address. During that speech, Putin boasted that the missiles could hit almost any point across the world and evade the United States' missile defense shield.

It is thought that Russia used the hypersonic weapon in support of Assad in the Syrian civil war, but it is not certain if it was the exact Kinzhal model.

The missile can fly at 10 times the speed of sound, and unlike other missiles can change course, making it impossible for air-defense systems to shoot it down. Nuclear weapons can be delivered with the Kinzhal missile.

The Kinzhal can travel over 7,000 mph, while the U.S. Tomahawk cruise missile can travel only as fast as 550 mph. The French Navy and the U.K.'s Royal Navy have been working together on a hypersonic missile, which is expected to be completed in 2030.

The type of missile used in Russia's attacks over the weekend was not confirmed by Ukrainian officials.

Unconfirmed reports

There are doubts over Russia's use of the missile. The lack of secondary explosions from the attack on the warehouse is suspicious according to one report.

The magazine questioned how an Orlan 10 could fly over the targeted area to film the strike. If a maneuverable hypersonic missile was needed for the attack, how could a drone film the strike and get away safely?

The Russian analyst said that the missile would have little effect on the ground in Ukraine. Defense strategy researcher Joseph Henrotin suggested that Russia could be running out of weaponry. Putin might have used the missile to raise the stakes of the war, according to Henrotin.

According to the U.N.'s human rights office, at least 847 civilians have been killed since Feb. 24, including 155 men, 119 women, 21 boys and seven girls.
