Want to dislike Russia's invasion of Ukraine more? It may doom the Paris climate accords and our planet.

The Secretary General of the United Nations admitted that the problem of climate change was not solved at the end of the conference.

The conflict is making climate change worse because it has disrupted fossil fuel supply chains in Europe.

He said in a speech that countries could become so consumed by the immediate fossil fuel supply gap that they neglect or knee-cap policies to cut fossil fuel use. Fossil fuels can be addictive and destruction can be assured.

The secretary general believes that an accelerated phasing out of coal and fossil fuels is the only true pathway to energy security.

Timeline Bling

The UN isn't just raising alarm bells about the rise in global temperatures, which just this past week caused extreme heat in the polar regions. To keep the average global temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, the NGOs provided a timeline for countries to move away from fossil fuels and coal based on their wealth.

More than 40 countries at the COP26 summit pledged to phase out pollutants by the year 2030 for larger economies and by the year 2040 for smaller ones.

The United States did not agree to stop coal development domestically within the next decade, but did say it would stop funding the overseas purchase of coal, gas, and oil. Russia and China did not sign the pledge.

The third-largest coal producer in Europe was one of the 40 countries that signed the pledge to stop using coal by the year 2035.

With the war from Russia affecting the country's infrastructure and energy capabilities, it's unclear whether it will make its target to stop producing.

Climate change and the war in the Ukraine have led to the use of fossil fuels.

More on war fuel.
