USA TODAY Travel Reporter Morgan Hines detailed her time on a cruise ship with positive COVID-19 cases.

USA TODAYUSA TODAY

The vacation of a lifetime was planned by Sharon Rudolph, 52, who packed eight suitcases for the trip with her mother and two children. The cruise ended abruptly after the ship ran aground in the Dominican Republic.

The former travel agent was one of thousands of passengers who were told their cruise was canceled days before it was supposed to end. The passengers were given a plan to disembark and head back to the U.S. on charter flights from Puerto Plata.

Some passengers are still in the Dominican Republic trying to get home after the cancellation.

The situation has become more than just an annoyance and sad end to the trip according to Rudolph.

Passengers could not leave immediately because the cruise was restricted.

They are stranding us at the port because they are sailing away, and we will be left in the hot sun until a bus arrives to take us to the airport.

The heat can make medical conditions worse for Rudolph and her mother. Their flight was to leave at 7:30 pm.

More than 1,000 passengers are still waiting to go to the airport hours after disembarking, according to a passenger who was scheduled to leave at 7:30 p.m.

She said that they were waiting in the port for buses to take them to their destinations. They sailed away.

Norwegian Cruise Line did not reply to multiple requests from USA TODAY.

At the port, airport: Chaotic scenes

Lynn arrived in Florida just before 3 p.m. Friday sent a photo from the airport to USA TODAY.

She said that no one from Norwegian was here and that people were told they were in the wrong line.

Keller said she had just purchased a burger for $25 at the port in Puerto Plata. With hours to wait.

Keller knows that no one from Norwegian Cruise Line is there.

She said that the people of Puerto Plata are helpful and nice. Most people are shocked that we were kicked out of a foreign country so early.

Passengers are worried that the planes may not arrive at the airport and that flights out will be canceled, Keller said.

Flights out not full, passenger says

Catherine Taylor, who was on the Escape, told USA TODAY that she and her family boarded a plane to Florida after some confusion at the airport.

She said that they were supposed to be on the 7:30 flight on Eastern Airline flight 3504 but they didn't have a seat. There were hundreds of people with no help or direction.

They were able to get tickets. Hundreds of other passengers were standing by for flights that were over booked. Taylor said that the flight they were on was empty.

She said that they asked if we could wait for more passengers and the flight attendants were told they couldn't.

Compensation offered by the cruise line isn't enough, some travelers say

A full refund and credit for a future cruise were offered by Norwegian. It is not helping much.

A future cruise credit is worthless because a person has been abandoned dockside with her 78-year-old disabled mother and her two minor children.

Some passengers say that the package is enough but it doesn't take away from the stress of the situation.

I think they went above and beyond what was necessary, but logistically it was a nightmare.

She said that everyone was in good spirits until about yesterday.

Lynn hopes that the wake-up call for Norwegian will make sure that no one else has to go through that.

Keller was not happy with the way the cruise line went about getting passengers home.

The CDC has updated its cruise guidance.

Passengers are frustrated with the situation. Can they do anything about it?

Jim Walker is an attorney who runs Cruise Law News.

It seems that if they are offered a free cruise and future cruise credit that it is about as fair as they can get.

He said that no maritime attorney would take up a case against the cruise line for a passenger who feels inconvenient.

If you go on a cruise and you get off with your life, and you haven't had a bad medical incident, you have had a good cruise, according to Walker.

Without a physical injury, you are at the mercy of the cruise lines.

It is not a situation that would warrant a lawsuit according to Michael Winkleman. He doesn't think a future cruise credit is enough.

They should use their travel agent or deal directly with the cruise line to get some additional perks. How do you make it better?

Testing requirements and proof of vaccine are included in the travel restrictions.
