Lane Morrell was diagnosed with pneumonia in November. He was hospitalized for a few days.

The problems of the 49-year-old Jackson resident were just beginning.

Bettina found him in the bathroom with blood on the floor. No one wants to hear about flesh-eatingbacteria.

Lane was hospitalized for 80 days and had 17 surgeries. He lost 60 pounds, dropping from 215 to 150 on his 6-foot-4 frame. He was unable to run his contracting business because of his recovery. Bettina has stepped in to fill that role while juggling the needs of their two children, but there is one hitch: She is recovering from Stage 3 colon cancer.

How much misfortune can a family endure?

Lane said that God only gives you what you can handle.

Bettina's story: Jackson mom hit by cancer, $50K bill, and I never thought it would happen to me.

'The tub filled with blood’

Bettina had surgery in 2020 to remove a six-centimeter tumor.

She said that she is currently in remission and that she did develop three hernias. I have to have surgery once Lane gets back on his feet, but it is so minute compared to everything else we have gone through. I wear a brace around my waist, that's the least of my worries right now.

Bettina gets their kids off to school and then spends two hours dressing Lane, who has still-open wounds, before heading to the office to run his business.

Lane said that she is the best wife he could ever ask for. It was not a problem for her to stand there and deal with it.

What did hospital workers learn from two years of confrontation?

Bettina cleaned the three gaping holes in Lane's abdomen, groin and backside while Dennis was at their house.

She does it with a smile on her face after two hours.

It is not known when or if Lane will be able to return to construction work.

He said that he was trying not to use a cane because he had graduated from a walker to a cane.

I don't think I'll be able to do it again, he said.

A lesson in perspective

The local Knights of Columbus council raised $13,000 for the Morells last month. A golf outing is planned.

It's terrible when bad things happen to good people, said a Knights of Columbus officer.

A friend started a campaign. The Morells are grateful.

The community is great, Lane said.

Lane and Bettina were treated at the CentraState Medical Center. They had the same surgeons, by luck of the draw.

Bettina said that they saved her husband's life. They were amazing.

Between Lane's wounds, Bettina's continued remission, mounting medical bills, and concerns about the viability of the family business, there is still a big hill to climb. They are keeping it in perspective, which is a valuable lesson for the rest of us.

Bettina said that she doesn't care if we lose everything.
