David Beckham gave his account to a doctor in the city of Kharkiv on Sunday.

Dr Iryna, head of a regional perinatal centre, spent the day posting videos about the work medical professionals are doing in the midst of the conflict.

Patients had to be moved to the basement to escape shelling as footage showed newborns being treated.

Beckham has more than 71 million followers on the photo sharing site.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star said he wanted to highlight the amazing work Iryna and health workers like her are doing to save lives.

Since the Russian invasion, Dr Iryna's work has been "24/7", she said.

The first days were the most difficult. She said that they had to learn how to work with bombs.

We are probably risking our lives, but we don't think about it. We like our work. Doctors and nurses here, we worry, we cry, but we will not give up.

Russian shelling of the city of Kharkiv has been going on for more than three weeks.

On the first day of the war, all pregnant women and mothers had to be moved into the basement of the centre.

She said that it was a terrible three hours.

Babies receiving intensive care had to stay upstairs because life-saving equipment couldn't be moved.

Beckham is an ambassador for Unicef and encouraged his followers to donate to the agency.

He and wife Victoria, who was a singer with the Spice Girls, donated a million dollars to help fund the work in Ukraine.
